![]() High in the mountain country of New Hampshire is a wonderful vacation "find", called Storybook Motor Inn. Steeped in the New England tradition of hospitality, this charming old Inn has a long and interesting past. The main building is over 200 years old and was originally a small farmhouse but new rooms were added almost yearly as the children in the family increased. The farm remained within the same family for several generations. When the drums began to roll calling volunteers for the Civil War two of the sons joined up and only one returned. As farming grew less lucrative, the old homestead was turned into a boarding house for the first few tentative tourists who began arriving by stage to see Mt. Washington. Eventually the old farm was sold to a lumber company and there are still tales told of wild Saturday night sprees held by the rugged lumberjacks. After the lumberjacks left the more Northern areas, the house remained vacant for many years, until it caught the eye of some tourists from California. They fell in love with the area and the old house, and decided to make a dream come true by turning it into an Inn. After months of extensive and painstaking remodeling, Storybook Inn emerged, a great blend of old and new. Storybook Motor Inn has since had several additions, including a 30 room modern motel, but the charm of yesteryear is still very evident in its colonial-style rooms. Storybook, owned and operated by members of the same tourist's family, Mr. and Mrs. Jan G. Filip, is a chapter of real New England, and although the guests no longer arrive by stage, they still are treated with the same old fashioned style friendliness. |
